This project, in a constellation of voices brought together by EIDOS Foundation and Magnum Photos, under the curatorship of Florian Ebner—Chief Curator of photography at Center Pompidou, Paris—is a cross section through the diverse, Romanian cultural heritage. 100 years into its birth and through both darkness and light, Romania shines as nation of striking, unique contrasts.
Oases of tradition spring amidst urban cacophony. Young and old blend, now architecture, now caricature. This collaboration seeks to, on the occasion of the country’s 100 years anniversary, capture the country’s multifaceted identity in this key moment in time.
Facing the questions of a society in transition and motion in a global word, the exhibition and its accompanying publication give a sincere portrait of a country that is defined by a variety of “Romanias”, but also by the astonishing creativity and energy that these contrasts are generating. The photographic and literal essays are reflecting these different realities. Beyond one perspective or one style, it is the ambition of the project, in midst a pictures flooded world, to find new and different visual ways of speaking about the social conditions of our time.
Finally, the constellation of very different documentary approaches inside the Magnum agency and in exchange with the Romanian perspectives also extends the traditional (Magnum) way of reporting about a country.
